A Bit About Naoki
Naoki Toyomura is pursuing a Professional Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music with Professors Michael Dussek and Joseph Middleton. He received his Masters of Philosophy in Performance Studies at the University of Cambridge where his thesis examined Shostakovich’s symphonism and its performative and pedagogical implications for his piano literature. At Cambridge, Naoki participated in the Pembroke College Lieder Scheme and the Instrumental Award Scheme. Further, he co-directed the Hughes Hall College Choir and conducted the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra for full seasons including directing Beethoven’s Triple Concerto from the piano.
He also received Bachelors's degrees in both piano and economics at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester studying with Professor Natalya Antonova and later with Van Cliburn Gold Medal winner, Professor Alexander Kobrin, and Liszt International Competition 2nd prize winner, Peter Klimo. While at Rochester, he became a Provost Circle Scholar as an exceptional student-athlete, received a Take Five scholarship, and was President of the Student Council.
With piano, he has won a string of first prizes from various competitions around New Zealand, America, and Japan. He has participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Brel Song Academy, Helsinki Conducting Masterclass as well as the Kirishima International Music Festival, winning the Chamber Music Award. In addition, Naoki has performed chamber music with members of the Tokyo Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, Auckland Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, and Syracuse Symphonia orchestras. He also studied piano pedagogy with leading American pedagogical leader, Tony Caramia.
